REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: Pennington Day’s new location is perfect
Thursday, May 21, 2009 11:05 AM EDT
By John Tredrea, Staff Writer
Pennington Day’s new location was a very pleasant one.
South Main Street between Academy Street and East Curlis Avenue is narrow, shady and lined with historic houses on both sides. This stretch has a very cozy, intimate, friendly feel that seems perfect for this kind of event. It certainly felt perfect to me Saturday.
Another good move was selling food and beverages both at the north end, near Academy Street, and the south end, which this year was at Toll Gate Grammar School. That is such a lovely school, really, with its red brick and meticulous white trim and cupola and greenery, that including it as part of Pennington Day’s territory was a great idea.
To walk that stretch of South Main Street and then see that school was to know what a charming and beautiful town this is. And with no cars on the street, you could really enjoy it to the fullest. And no cars on the street, say hallelujah, of course is a big part of what Pennington Day is. Saturday, the weather was fine, and everyone seemed to be in a great mood. How much better can it get?
Moving the event south may have meant some businesses got less traffic than they would have had Pennington Day included the downtown area as it did for many years. But some of the thousands of people who came Saturday must have gone downtown as well as visiting the Pennington Day booths and attractions.
And as far as looks and personality go, the thinking here is the new location is a winner, much more so than the shadeless intersection of Main Street and Delaware Avenue and its expanses of much-used concrete and macadam.
Thanks to all the Pennington Day volunteers for the hard work that produced such an enjoyable experience.

Pennington Day, Inc. Grant Provides $5,000 in Seed Money to Fund Launch of Pennington Farmers Market
Pennington Day has granted $5,000 Hopewell Valley Green to establish a weekly farmers market in the parking lot of the Pennington Quality Market. The market, to be known as the Pennington Farmers Market, is scheduled to begin its charter season Saturday, June 6, and will operate from the PQM shopping center, just outside PQM every Saturday morning from 9 am-1 pm through mid-October. Five farms are committed to participating each week, offering a broad range of fresh local produce.
“Our motto is ‘Grown by Many Hands,’” said Cynthia Beloff, designer and manager of the Pennington Farmers Market. “But truly, this would not have been possible without one helping hand in particular – that of Pennington Day. We appreciate their generous gift and support of this wonderful oppoprtunity to give back to Hopewell Valley residents."
Pennington resident Rachel Donington-Torpey, who was also instrumental in getting the Market off the ground, observed that most farmers markets in the US are sponsored by “a Main Street organization of some sort. For those of us here in Hopewell Valley, Pennington Day clearly embraces that role of community builder.”
The Pennington Farmers Market will arrange itself around the Pennington Center signpost, between the two entrances along Route 31. Despite its title, the farmers market will in fact operate just over the borough line in Hopewell Township, and include items grown or produced within fifty miles (abiding by a strict definition of “local food”).
Expenses for the market’s first year of operations are estimated at $5,000, which includes the cost of equipment, publicity materials, and a part-time market manager. In announcing a seed grant to cover these expenses, Albert Teixeira, president of the board of trustees of Pennington Day, Inc., pointed out that his organization raises money “for more than just Pennington Day. We solicit to fund community initiatives that will enhance our local quality of life and raise awareness of our Valley’s roots. A farmers market does this and much, much more. Clearly, it’s something that many people will enjoy.”
Seeking to become a destination for families and foodies from throughout central New Jersey, the Pennington Farmers Market will offer a schedule of entertainment and exhibits. Its list of free fun educational events already includes cooking classes, live music, environmental workshops, and demonstrations of earth-friendly products and ideas.
For a preview of the Market or to learn more about it, including volunteering opportunities, be sure to come by the Pennington Farmers booth at Pennington Day on Saturday,May 16. The Market will also have a float in Pennington's Memorial Day parade.
Volunteers are needed to help with every aspect of the Saturday morning market. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to e-mail Hopewell.green@gmail.com. Pennington Day, Inc., is a 501c3 nonprofit oganization.
